You are looking at an excellent condition 1976 Gibson MK-81 acoustic guitar w hard case.  It features MINIMAL fretwear, a very flamey solid sitka or Engelmann spruce top, solid rosewood back and sides, flamed maple neck, gold hardware, ebony soundhole rosette and bridge, ebony fretboard with figured abalone block inlays and about ¾” of extra body depth. Set up with extra light strings, strung low and fast.

Based on the Gibson Mark Series (MK) acoustic line produced between 1975 and 1979, the 1976 Gibson MK-81 was a high-end acoustic guitar designed with advanced, non-traditional acoustic engineering. It was part of a collaboration between Gibson, Dr. Michael Kasha, and luthier Richard Schneider.

Key specifications for the 1976 MK-81 include:

  • Design: Based on Kasha acoustic theories, featuring a unique, often braced, design for improved tonal output.
  • Top: Solid spruce top (usually sitka or Engelmann).
  • Back and Sides: Rosewood.
  • Fingerboard: Ebony with figured abalone block inlays.
  • Bridge: Specialized replaceable, slotted saddle design.
  • Headstock: Distinctive "modern" or "fan" shaped peghead.
  • Hardware: Gold-plated tuners.
  • Binding: Multi-bound top and back, featuring signature "red line" highlights.
  • Body Dimensions & Specs
  • Upper Bout: 11 3/4"
  • Waist: 10 3/16"
  • Lower Bout: 16 3/16"
  • Body Length: 20 5/32"
  • Body Depth: 5 3/64"

These guitars were known for a unique, modern tone rather than a traditional Gibson acoustic sound. Only 431 units of the MK-81 were produced in total.

The very few noticeable dings are pictured. This instrument is in fantastic condition for 50 years old! Due to the age of this guitar we’ve included several hi-def pics for you to enlarge so you get an idea of the overall shape of this guitar and make your own judgement about its condition.
