The Boss HM-2 Heavy Metal Distortion is one of the most distinctive distortion pedals to come out of the 1980s. This Made in Japan example carries serial #444100, which dates it to July 1984. It features the familiar Level, Color Mix Low, Color Mix High, and Distortion controls, giving the pedal considerably more tonal shaping than a simpler distortion circuit.
The HM-2 is capable of the dense, aggressive sound for which it became famous, particularly with the EQ and distortion controls pushed hard. At more moderate settings, it can also produce surprisingly useful overdrive and distortion tones with plenty of body and low-end presence.
The Color Mix controls provide substantial low- and high-frequency shaping, allowing the pedal to move from darker, thicker distortion to brighter and more cutting sounds.
This pedal shows visible cosmetic wear around the enclosure consistent with age and use. The wear is cosmetic only, and the pedal remains fully functional.
For the player looking for an original Japanese HM-2 rather than a modern recreation, this is a well-used but honest July 1984 example of one of Boss’s most distinctive vintage distortion pedals.
