The Taylor 614ce Prototype Next Generation offers a rare opportunity to own an early version of one of Taylor’s most refined updates to the Grand Auditorium platform. Prototype builds like this come from the development phase before full production is finalized, giving players access to instruments tied directly to the evolution of the model. Even when the specs closely match the final release, these guitars carry a different level of rarity and connection to the design process.
This example follows the same Next Generation 614ce platform, but stands apart visually with an Antique Blonde top paired with Taylor’s “Brown Sugar” finish on the back and sides. That combination gives the guitar a warmer, more organic look compared to other versions, while still highlighting the figuring and depth of the maple body.
The Next Generation 614ce continues Andy Powers’ reworking of maple as a premium acoustic tonewood. Rather than the brighter, more immediate response historically associated with maple guitars, this platform leans into a fuller, more balanced voice with added low-end presence while maintaining excellent clarity and note separation.
Built with Big Leaf maple back and sides and a torrefied Sitka spruce top, the guitar delivers a clear, articulate response with added warmth and openness from the roasted top. The torrefied Sitka contributes a more relaxed, played-in character right out of the case, while the maple keeps the tone focused and highly responsive to the player’s touch.
Taylor’s scalloped V-Class bracing and Action Control Neck system are key elements of the Next Generation redesign, improving sustain, balance, and long-term setup flexibility. The Grand Auditorium body shape keeps the instrument versatile across a wide range of playing styles.
