Not sure of the year of this Meliphone Special Steel Ebonite tenor piece, but it came in with a mid-'60s Conn 10M whose elderly owner recently passed away. I'm posing it's an earlier year because a 90-year-old player here told me his parents bought him a used one of these HR mouthpieces when he was in elementary school. They were produced from 1923 to 1967 by The Woodwind Co., New York.

Stamped on it and all clearly visible are Steel Ebonite, Meliphone Special within an oval, its patent number 1452953, and B5* on its table. It was made with a metal banded shank which pretty much guaranteed it would never split, although the material of this piece is bullet-proof without that. Here's one which was sold recently at $300.

Price includes a nice but expectedly tarnished ligature and cap. The lig is a single screw type very similar to an Otto Link, except it actually holds the reed tight against the table.
