Up for sale is a Squier by Fender SST-45 Stratocaster, made in Japan in 1983 during the highly regarded FujiGen / JV serial era.
This is a very attractive early Japanese Squier Stratocaster finished in Fiesta Red, with a classic 1960s-style look and a strong vintage Japanese Fender character.
The guitar features an alder body, a beautifully figured maple neck, and a very dark rosewood fingerboard. The neck wood has a particularly nice straight-grain appearance with a subtle flame-like figure visible in certain angles, which is one of the charming details often seen on early FujiGen-era instruments.
It is equipped with the original SQ-4 single-coil pickups. These are not ceramic pickups, but alnico-magnet single coils, delivering a clear, open, and articulate Stratocaster tone with a dry, woody midrange and classic bell-like chime. The control layout is 1 Volume, 2 Tone, and a 5-way pickup selector.
One especially interesting feature of this example is that the upper frets, from approximately the 16th to 21st fret, have been lightly scalloped. The work appears to be very clean and professionally done. It gives the guitar a slightly more custom feel for lead playing in the higher register, while the lower fret area remains standard.
Another notable point is that the previous owner appears to have applied a clear over-lacquer finish in order to create more of a vintage lacquer-style appearance and feel. This gives the guitar a slightly more aged and vintage-inspired character compared with a standard factory poly finish.
Inside the neck pocket and on the neck, there is a “9 EXT” stamp. Based on this, this guitar may have been a non-catalog or special-production example. In the 1983 catalog, the SST-45 is generally listed with limited specifications, but this example appears to have a less common specification combination. Because of this, I would describe it as a very interesting early-JV-era Squier rather than a standard catalog example.
The original “45” model sticker is still present on the back of the headstock, which is a nice detail for collectors.
Cosmetically, the guitar is in good vintage condition overall. There are some small dings, light scratches, and minor signs of use, but nothing that affects playability. Please check all photos carefully as they are part of the description.
The frets have more than 80% life remaining. The neck is in good condition, the truss rod works properly, and the electronics have been tested and work correctly.
A vintage leather gig bag from the 1980s is included. Please note that the inside of the case has some torn areas.
This is a very cool early Japanese Squier Stratocaster from the FujiGen/JV period, with a rare Fiesta Red look, original SQ-4 alnico pickups, a dark rosewood board, and several unique custom/vintage-style details. A great piece for players and collectors who appreciate early MIJ Fender history.
