Pearl introdusse la serie Free Floating più di trent'anni fa ed è ancora presente in catalogo con una vasta scelta di modelli e materiali. Fu certamente una novità per il modo batteristico: il fusto (eventualmente sostituibile) non era forato e appesantito dai blocchetti, e poggiava su un anello in alluminio che ospitava sia le boccole filetatte su cui si avvitano le viti tiranti sia la macchinetta tendi cordiera.
Il rullante in nostro possesso ha il fusto in acero laccato Piano Black, cerchi die cast e il tendi cordiera è regolabile su entrambe le estremità.
Tuttora apprezzati, questi tamburi hanno un timbro risonante, definito e con una grande proiezione sonora. Il fusto intercambiabile con gli altri disponibili in catalogo (alluminio, acciaio, ottone, bronzo, betulla, mogano) permette una vastissima varietà timbrica.
