REFURBISHED Peiker TM 91/HL 1960S - XLR

Mid-century German audio engineering, the Peiker TM 91/HL combines lightweight construction, unusual industrial styling, and a surprisingly characterful sound signature. Originally developed as a directional communication and speech microphone, the TM 91/HL stands out through its distinctive grille architecture and compact all-plastic body design. Despite its utilitarian origins, it delivers a warm and highly usable vintage tone with a focused midrange and soft high-frequency response that gives recordings an immediately nostalgic character.

BUILD & DESIGN

The TM 91/HL features an unusual lightweight plastic housing paired with an intricate layered grille and mesh assembly that gives the microphone a very recognizable visual identity. Unlike many heavier broadcast microphones of its era, the Peiker feels compact and practical in the hand while still maintaining a surprisingly robust construction. The directional “Richtmikrofon” layout was designed for controlled voice pickup and reduced ambient capture. This example has already been adapted to XLR connectivity for easy modern use.

Capsule

Dynamic moving-coil capsule with cardioid (Nierencharakteristik) polar pattern. The tuning strongly favours speech clarity and warmth rather than extended high-frequency detail, resulting in a smooth and vintage-style response.

SOUND CHARACTERISTICS

The TM 91/HL delivers a very warm and mid-focused sound signature with softened highs and a rounded transient response. Voices come across dense and intimate, with an especially pleasant low-mid character that can make thinner sources sound fuller and more relaxed.

The rolled-off top end helps reduce harshness naturally, making the microphone particularly interesting for spoken word, vintage vocal textures, radio-style recordings, harmonica, guitar amplifiers, or lo-fi production work where a smoother tonal balance is desirable.
