This is a 2015 Gibson Limited Edition Japan Reissue Flying V was made exclusively for the Japanese market. Gibson USA did not produce any Flying V’s for the USA market in 2015, which is one of the reasons these guitars are rare. Because the Japanese guitar industry is associated with producing high quality guitars, Gibson had to select a model that’s unique and would be desirable in the Japanese market. So Gibson selected a Flying V that was produced from 1975-1978 and during this time they only made a total of 179 in Tobacco Sunburst, which is now called Vintage Sunburst for this Limited Edition Japan Reissue Flying V. The ones made from 1975-1978 retail from $8000-$14,000 and having owned a 1976 Tobacco Sunburst, these Limited Edition Japan Reissue Flying V’s are a closest replica of the original ones that Gibson USA has ever made.
What makes this Limited Edition Flying V different than a ‘67 or ‘71 Flying V is the larger rounded headstock, neck volute, and higher neck heel joint. The neck profile is thinner than a ‘58 Flying V, but not thin as a ‘67 Flying V, and is right in middle with a comfortable D profile, and these are also Plek’d from the Gibson factory.
This guitar is in excellent overall condition and is unmodified. It has the normal surface scratches, swirls, and finish spots (See Photos). There’s a tiny scratch to right of the input jack next to the pickguard, a tiny dimple on the back of the headstock on the top right, and has a Demo stamp (See Photos). This guitar has barely been played and the frets and fretboard are in excellent condition. The neck is straight, action is low, and there’s plenty room for truss rod adjustments (See Photos).
We did a full setup with new D’Addario EXL-110 10-46 strings and this Flying V plays and sounds beautiful. It comes with Gibson COA book, truss rod adjustment tool, owner’s manual, and original Gibson hard case (See Photos).
Currently there’s a 15% import tariff on guitars coming from Japan. Whoever ends up buying this guitar is lucking out because if you import one from Japan, it would be subject to the 15% import tariff to have it shipped to the US.
