The Martin HD-28 1 11/16" Ambertone is a player-focused version of the classic herringbone dreadnought, combining the rich, complex tone of rosewood with a fast, comfortable neck feel and a striking vintage-inspired finish.
This build pairs a solid spruce top with East Indian rosewood back and sides, delivering deep bass, shimmering overtones, and a wide dynamic range. The HD-28 is known for its powerful low end and expansive tonal character, making it a favorite among flatpickers and players who want a full, commanding acoustic voice.
Finished in a bold Ambertone burst, this instrument blends traditional Martin tone with a visually rich, vintage aesthetic.
1 11/16" Nut Width – Why It MattersThe 1 11/16" nut width offers a slightly narrower feel compared to the standard 1 3/4", making this guitar especially appealing to players who prefer a quicker, more compact neck profile.
- Faster feel for flatpicking and lead work
- Comfortable transition for electric players
- Reduced left-hand fatigue over long sessions
- Balanced spacing without sacrificing control
This makes the guitar an excellent choice for players who want the power of a dreadnought with a more streamlined feel.
Construction & CraftsmanshipHandcrafted in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, this instrument features Martin’s traditional dovetail neck joint and solid tonewood construction for maximum resonance and long-term stability.
The forward-shifted Golden Era scalloped X-bracing allows the top to move more freely, enhancing bass response, sustain, and overall tonal openness.
Classic Style 28 herringbone detailing, combined with the Ambertone finish, gives the guitar a timeless pre-war inspired appearance.
Tone & PerformanceThe HD-28 platform is known for its powerful low end, rich overtone content, and strong projection. This version delivers excellent balance between depth and clarity, making it highly versatile across a range of playing styles.
- Deep, resonant bass with strong projection
- Rich overtone complexity and sustain
- Clear articulation across the tonal range
- Responsive feel for both light and heavy attack
This makes the guitar an outstanding choice for bluegrass players, singer-songwriters, and anyone seeking a powerful rosewood dreadnought with a fast-playing neck and standout visual appeal.
