1914 Gibson L-3 Archtop Acoustic – Sunburst – Original Case & Pickguard
Offered here is an exceptionally rare and remarkably complete 1914 Gibson L-3 archtop acoustic, finished in its original early Cremona-style sunburst and housed in its original hard case, complete with the original elevated pickguard still intact — a combination almost never found us together after more than a century.
This is not just another “old Gibson.” This is a true pre-war, pre-truss rod, Orville-era carved-top instrument from the golden infancy of American guitar building — built years before Gibson ever produced flat-tops as we know them today. These early L-series guitars represent the foundation of the modern archtop guitar and remain among the most historically important acoustic instruments Gibson ever produced. (Archtop)
The L-3 sat near the top of Gibson’s early guitar line and featured far more ornate appointments than the entry-level models of the period. By 1914, the model had evolved into a refined small-body archtop with carved construction, elegant binding, herringbone rosette work, elevated guard, and the unmistakable “The Gibson” script peghead. Production numbers from this era were extremely low, and surviving examples with original hardware, original guard, and original case are becoming nearly impossible to source. The second pickguard bracket is in the case and not attached.

Tone is exactly what these early Gibsons are famous for: dry, woody, immediate, and shockingly loud for the body size. It has that haunting old-world bark these carved-top Gibsons produce — somewhere between a parlor guitar, an archtop, and a primitive jazz box. Fingerpicked ragtime, old blues, early country, Celtic, and pre-war jazz all live naturally in this instrument. The mids leap out, notes stay articulate, and the guitar has the kind of character modern boutique builders still chase unsuccessfully. (Archtop)
The neck carve is substantial in the best possible way — unapologetically vintage, deeply V-shaped, and incredibly resonant in the hands. These guitars were built before modern standardization and feel alive in a way modern acoustics simply do not.
Condition is outstanding for a 112-year-old instrument. The fact that the original pickguard survived alone is remarkable; most disappeared decades ago due to shrinkage or breakage. The original case is equally rare and completes the package for collectors who understand how difficult it is to find truly intact examples from this period.
This is a serious collector-grade instrument, not a beginner guitar, not a “project,” and not something I need help selling. Instruments of this caliber and originality do not surface often, especially outside of major vintage dealers.
If you know what this is, you already understand the opportunity here.
No rush to sell.
