While Gibson’s Les Paul guitars peaked in the fifties, the man with his name on the headstock was never entirely satisfied with his guitar, and even less so, the pickups. Perhaps the most prolific inventor in the history of electronic music, Les Paul was not only a phenomenal guitar player, he was one of the greatest inventive minds in modern music.

In the mid-sixties, Les met the man who would become his lifelong friend/guitar tech/engineer, Tom Doyle. When Les broke it, Tom fixed it. They spent hours, days, months, and eventually years and decades together studying what makes a guitar sound good (and what doesn’t). The “TIME MACHINE” Les Paul is the culmination of literally decades of study and perseverance… guitars which are not only the best Les Pauls made today, but perhaps the best sounding Les Pauls ever made. The purists may scoff at such a bold statement, but the Tom Doyle “TIME MACHINE” Les Paul recreates everything that was great about those Les Pauls of the late fifties. Then mixes in the improvements that Les and Tom figured out during their decades of research together. Refining and re-defining what really great Humbuckers were actually capable of, which in turn changes what the Les Paul guitar is now capable of… it’s nothing short of amazing!

Our TIME MACHINE Les Paul guitars begin their life as Gibson Custom Shop Historic Les Pauls. To be a candidate, the guitar must have been manufactured in 2014 or later because that’s when Gibson switched to vintage correct hide glue, proper nitro finishes, vintage correct plastics, and original manufacturing specs. Most importantly, the guitar MUST weigh well under nine pounds and have a certain acoustic resonance property. The metamorphosis begins with every piece of the guitar being stripped off, including most of the nitrocellulose finish, then flawlessly aged with a proprietary system of the application of heat, cold and vibration. The end result is a beautifully checked lacquer finish, delightfully aged plastics, metals with a realistic patina, and an aged case that will make people’s jaw drop even before they lay eyes on the amazing guitar inside it.

The heart of the “TIME MACHINE” Les Paul is its Doyle Coils TRU-CLONES PAF Humbucker pickups and our ‘59 Holy Grail Harness. Featuring vintage spec REAL paper-in-oil capacitors, 550K audio taper pots, and Tom & Les Paul’s proprietary tweak on the classic PAF pickup design, these guitars are the most tonally sensitive guitars on the market. Finally, there is a guitar that actually uses all ten numbers on its knobs! With every slight movement of a Doyle Coils volume and tone knob, a new tone is discovered!
