Hello and welcome to the House of Chrome.
You are looking at a classic Shure 51 model dynamic microphone with clean smooth lines that make this one of the more famous mics in the early Shure Brothers line up. This particular example shown comes with a period Astatic E6G model desk stand in which to display.
It should be noted that the mic has been tested and cleaned. While the mic does still work the output is weaker than normal. I'd rate it at about 40% so this mic should be used for display, prop or repair purposes only.
The Shure 51 was originally manufactured in Chicago, ILL sometime between 1949 and 1956. The later Evanston model 51 was made between 1956 to 1960 and Shure eventually changed the look of the Shure 51 in 1960 changing the lower pistol grip and putting black silk screens inside instead of the early red silk screens. After 1964 Shure changed the model to the black foam screens. I believe Shure Brothers stopped manufacturing this mic in 1969 or 1970. These mics have a little weight to them being almost 2 pounds. The 51 has clean, deco styling with elegant looks and was a favorite microphone used for several years by musical legend Nat King Cole earlier in his career as seen in pictures # 2.
This is the Evanston, Illinois model.
Pic # 3 is of an old Shure mic catalog I have showing the 51 and it's basic characteristics.
This Shure 51 has the satin chrome finish with red silk screens that really pop. It's an all metal construction making the mic quite rugged and they have a bit of weight to them.
These Shure 51 mics have a dirtier "rockabilly" tone that many musicians like to replicate today. It's got a dirty sound. Very mid range and bright but again the mic has a compromised element. The Shure 51 is an omni-directional microphone. Void of any bass really and excellent as a harp mic.
This Shure 51 isn't physically perfect but it's pretty darn nice.
The satin chrome finish has zero dents or pitting. Just a couple scuff marks and tiny scratches as seen in the pictures provided. The ribs are straight with no fractures or dents. The joint mechanism holds strong like it should as well and can be tightened as needed with a screw driver. The front inner red silk screen has zero holes, rips, odors or fading. The Shure label looks as good as the day the mic was sold. I'd rate this mic an easy 8 + on a scale of 1 - 10 though many would rate higher.
The threading for the stand is excellent as is for the cable.
This mic will screw onto any microphone desk or floor stand you might be using.
MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS PART OF THIS SALE...
The mic comes with 1950's era Astatic E6G microphone desk stand. This is an aluminum painted base with painted wood stem / riser. The handle was detachable by giving it a half twist and lifting upwards. This model was widely produced by Astatic during the 1940's through 1950's.
It was ideal for handling microphone by keeping the wood handle on the mic as very few people actually held the microphone themselves back then.
This particular stand has typical lite wear as you can see. Some scuffs, tiny paint chips and scratches located on the base but no dents or fractures. The wood riser looks very good with a few spots of wear. Please let the detailed pictures be your guide. All 3 original rubber pads are still present and look great. It will keep the stand from scratching any surface it sits on. Mic stand with mic on top is appx 11 inches tall X 5 inches wide. The stand really compliments the mic and this will make a great display piece anywhere it sits in the home, studio or office.
I do combine shipping as well if you need anything else at all.
