This is a vintage Fender Mustang from the late 1960s. The neck dates to September 1966, though the previous owner believed the guitar as a whole to be from 1968.
It has lived a life, to say the least, and is far from 'original.' Nevertheless, it is an absolutely fantastic instrument. Pure rock and roll. It's clear whoever has also previously owned it has loved it, as the neck is worn down in a way that can only have come from being played to death. The time has come for me to part with it, simply because I don't play it as much as I used to and that it truly deserves, as I've fallen into making a different kind of music over the years since I originally bought it. I did gig this guitar multiple times in my old band. I've included a video of this in the listing, running into my old Vox AC30.
It has been refinished in 'champagne sparkle.' There's plenty of wear and tear. I was told by the previous owner that the big faded rectangular area just below the bridge was at some point covered up by a Guinness sticker!
The other big modification has been the installation of a Telecaster bridge pickup. Neither myself nor the previous owner knew when this was done, but I would imagine at some point during the late 1970s or early 80s, when guitar mods became a big trend. The pickup itself looks like it could be from the late 70s. Either way, the end result is it has an incredible punchy tone, very similar to a Tele but almost with a bit more mid range.
Other mods include:
- Schaller tuners ('made in West Germany,' so must be pretty old)
- I had it rewired so that you can put both pickups in series or parallel, though to be honest the bridge tone is so good I hardly ended up using this.
- Re-fretted with jumbo, stainless steel frets.
- I've very crudely hard-tailed the bridge, as the tremolo didn't work particularly well. I'm sure it could be restored to it's original working glory with a bit of TLC if you wanted to.
In short, this a guitar with a plentiful history that sounds incredible to this day, and I'm very reluctantly parting with it. Pricing is a bit difficult, as obviously this isn't a 'perfect' example, but I've seen listings between £2500-3000 for other late 1960s in a non-original condition, but also some actual vintage guitar dealers who have priced at around £2000. Needless to say, the value of vintage Fenders keeps going up, and with some further restoration work I'm sure you could resell the guitar for more. I'm listing this at what I think is a fair price, but I'm open to reasonable offers.
Local pickup only from Clevedon, north Somerset - I'd be willing to drive for up to an hour to exchange though (in which case please get in touch before buying).
