Martin / 1955 D-28
Famous for being used by many artists both internationally (Paul McCartney, Hank Williams, Clarence White) and domestically (Kazuhiko Kato, Kounosuke Sakazaki, Kosetsu Minami), this is a legendary instrument and perhaps the most famous guitar for popularizing the dreadnought worldwide.
It excels in many genres, including country, bluegrass, and folk music.
Its wide range and understated sound make it suitable for a variety of musical scenes, which is likely why it's used by artists across many genres.
—Specifications unique to 1955
The D-28, introduced in 1931, has undergone numerous specification changes and has been constantly updated.
The 1955 specification change was the shape of the pickguard.
Before 1955, it had a rounded shape, but from 1955 onwards, the lower part of the pickguard changed to a more angular shape.
Remarkably, this particular instrument retains its original condition without any cracks caused by the difference in shrinkage between the pickguard and the wood.
Top material and bracing
Spruce is used for the top.
From 1947 onwards, the specifications changed from herringbone trim to white/black multi-stripe, becoming a standard specification that continued into later generations.
The binding is made of plastic.
The bracing was changed to non-scalloped bracing from 1944.
-Sides/Back
Features quarter-sawn Brazilian rosewood.
The striped grain gives it a beautiful look.
The center stripe features a checkerboard pattern.
Fingerboard
The ebony fingerboard has had its 7th fret dot changed to a larger one since 1947.
Neck
The mahogany neck features a V-shaped neck with a comfortable thickness.
Many people would agree that this is the neck that defines a vintage D-28.
Bridge
The ebony downbelly bridge is fitted with white bridge pins and a long saddle.
Head
The head, made of Brazilian rosewood veneer, has a slightly rounded, slim shape and features a script logo.
-Tuning Machine
The tuner is a KLUSON sealed back tuner (commonly known as a waffle back tuner).
[Comment from the person in charge: Hoshino]
The D-28 is a special model among acoustic guitars.
Affectionately known as "Nippachi," I imagine many people have memories of listening to records or seeing artists use them, while dreaming of owning a D-28 someday.
Strumming it produces a powerful and beautiful tone.
