A 1968 Oxford 10-inch 8-ohm speaker with a round ceramic magnet is a hallmark component of late-1960s "drip-edge" Fender tube amplifiers. Known for a warmer, "woolly" tone compared to Jensens, these original speakers are essential for vintage Fender tonal authenticity, particularly in Princetons, Vibrolux Reverbs, and Super Reverbs.

Specifications;

  • Manufacturer: Oxford Transducer Company (EIA code 465).
  • Date Code: 137605 or the 5th week of 1966.
  • Size: 10 inch.
  • Impedance: 8 Ohm Nominal.
  • Magnet Type:  Ceramic (often
  • DC Resistance: Approx. 5.9 – 6.5 Ohms (typical for an 8-ohm speaker).
  • Power Handling: Typically 20-30 watts RMS (varies by specific "J" or "L" model, designed for lower-wattage vintage tube amps).
  • Common Model Numbers: 10J4-5, 10L6-1.

Original Uses and Applications:

During 1960's, Fender used these as stock speakers in several amplifiers:

  • Fender Princeton Reverb: A single 10J4-5 8-ohm speaker is commonly found here.
  • Fender Super Reverb: A quad set (4x10) of 8-ohm speakers was used in the Super Reverb, making this speaker perfect for that 32-ohm total load (4x8 Ohm parallel).
  • Fender Concert / Vibrolux: Also used as original equipment in these models.

Typical Sound and Characteristics

  • "Woolly" Breakup: Known for a warm, somewhat "woolly" or soft breakup when pushed, which is highly sought after for blues and classic rock.
  • Fender Tone: Considered "correct" for the "drip edge" and late-blackface era, providing a balanced, warm tone rather than a bright, punchy one.
  • Original Cones: The original paper cones are fragile and produce a specific woody tone, which is why original, undamaged speakers are valued

NOTE: Too cool. We just shipped very recently this summer a 1967 MapleGlo Rickenbacker 6-12 Converter 'comb' guitar to Billy Corigan of Smashing Pumpkins! We also then shipped a vintage 50 watt Marshall head to L.A. studio-touring guitarist extraodinaire, Michael Landau, and 2 vintage guitars to Jack White's organization down in Nashville just a few days before his 50th. birthday! mmm? Add 'The Kentucky Head Hunters' to the list, just sold Greg a cool little 50's Valco tube combo amp!

Gordy's Music has become a Detroit institution! Our shop was used as a filming location for a few films like "Miracle in Motor City" a Christmas movie on Lifetime (featuring Smoky Robinson). We've supplied gear for movies including "Bill & Ted Face The Music" with Keanu Reeves. We've got decades of celebrity customers, including recent visits from Beck, Eric Johnson, and we recently sold Billy Joel's bassist a cool Gibson SG he is in love with. One day a while back Andre 3000 and his group stopped in to browse as they were playing Masonic Temple that night and right after that we sold an old oil can Morley Wah Vibrato pedal to Credence Clearwater Revival's thee John Fogerty!

We are having and have had a lot of fun here at Gordy's Music! I was just remembering about 35 years ago a tour bus pulled up to our little shop, and who rolls right in and hangs out for an hour? Lenny Kravitz and his entire group, right about the same time I was selling many guitars to and chauffeuring around Dee Dee Ramone who had an apartment a block down from my house.
