1971-72 Fender Precision Bass

We have a Vintage Fender Precision Sunburst Bass with a bit of music history. This bass was owned and played by Alabama Music Hall of Fame recipient Jothan McKinley Callins. Callins was a well-respected jazz bassist, trumpeter and composer who performed with Sun Ra, Lional Hampton, Chuck Mangione, Stevie Wonder and BB King. Having joined the Sun Ra Arkestra in 1989, he also had his own band Jothan Callins & The Sounds of Togetherness with whom he released the album “Winds of Change” In 1975.

The serial number indicates the bass was made in early 1972, though some other parts indicate as early as 1971.  The input jack was replaced in our shop, and one of the tuners was bent and replaced with a matching tuner from a 1975 Fender Jazz bass, as was the E-string saddle screw. The chrome bridge cover is unfortunately missing, but all other original parts have remained intact and functional. We have included an early 1970’s period Fender Bass case, although it is not the original case that came with this bass.

The '71-'72 Fender Precision Bass features a solid alder body, paired with a 34" scale, slim C profile, gloss maple neck and rosewood fretboard. Nut width is about 1 5/8", and the overall weight is about 8.5lbs. The neck is straight and truss rod turns smoothly; the frets have been worn down over time but are level and smooth, allowing for optimally low action and easy playing. The average string height at the 12th fret is about .12", and about .002" at the 1st fret.

The flatwound setup feels and sounds incredible- low action that plays like a dream yet allows clear, crisp tones all around the neck, spot-on intonation, and powerful output from the vintage jazz pickup. This piece has clearly been well loved, sustaining some damage to the back and bottom, as pictured above. Luckily the top has remained in overall great condition, and the finish does not appear to have any checking, only a small area where the gloss has worn out around the armrest.

An instrument absolutely full of history and character, this is no wall hanger - this bass wants to be played and would make the perfect companion on stage or in the studio. It plays far too well to stay in the case. Whether you are a seasoned collector, jazz history enthusiast, or gigging musician hunting for that perfect vintage mojo, this one-of-a-kind piece of music history is an opportunity not worth missing.
