This Acoustic 320 bass head came to me with a slew of other basses, amps, effects, gear, etc. from an estate of a dear late friend-past employee of 45 plus years. It is a bittersweet situation that I am selling off his gear for his family.
As a fellow bassist like me, he had pretty good taste in his equipment and was a gigging musician who doubled on saxophone all around the 'D' 'Motown' area where the gear and we all came from.
So up for sale we have another 1981 Acoustic 320 bass head with this one being in near mint condition. The amp is fully original and was one of 2 purchased by my friend back then. This one was kept as a backup. You can see by the condition he did not have to use it often in the past 45 years which tells you just how dependable these amps are.
I used a similar version Acoustic 371 head for 40 years in my own career as a bassist-vocalist bandleader. In all those years besides an occasional cleaning, I only had to replace the ground switch.
My amp tech of 40 years cleaned all the input output jacks, EQ, and anything else inside. The amp has a very solid clean bill of health inside and out.
These older short era heads are very powerful and real workhorses. I swear by these older Acoustic amplifiers. The older ones are the best!
Cosmetically for being 45 years old, the amp looks new even from a short distance. There are a few surface blemishes, slight nick in the tolex, and a scratch here and there, mostly on the bottom and back metal panels.
The amp comes with the owners manual still in it's original unopened plastic, the 2 function footswitch, the original receipt of purchase from a Detroit music store back in 1981, and the blue Acoustic Company blue Lifetime Warranty card as seen in picture. Not sure if that lifetime warranty is still being honored these days.
A 1 owner great sounding, powerful, and dependable 300 watt bass amplifier in near new condition!

NOTE: Too cool. We just shipped very recently this summer a 1967 MapleGlo Rickenbacker 6-12 Converter 'comb' guitar to Billy Corigan of Smashing Pumpkins! We also then shipped a vintage 50 watt Marshall head to L.A. studio-touring guitarist extraodinaire, Michael Landau, and 2 vintage guitars to Jack White's organization down in Nashville just a few days before his 50th. birthday! mmm? Add 'The Kentucky Head Hunters' to the list, just sold Greg a cool little 50's Valco tube combo amp!
Gordy's Music has become a Detroit institution! Our shop was used as a filming location for a few films like "Miracle in Motor City" a Christmas movie on Lifetime (featuring Smoky Robinson). We've supplied gear for movies including "Bill & Ted Face The Music" with Keanu Reeves. We've got decades of celebrity customers, including recent visits from Beck, Eric Johnson, and we recently sold Billy Joel's bassist a cool Gibson SG he is in love with. One day a while back Andre 3000 and his group stopped in to browse as they were playing Masonic Temple that night and right after that we sold an old oil can Morley Wah Vibrato pedal to Credence Clearwater Revival's thee John Fogerty!
We are having and have had a lot of fun here at Gordy's Music! I was just remembering about 35 years ago a tour bus pulled up to our little shop, and who rolls right in and hangs out for an hour? Lenny Kravitz and his entire group, right about the same time I was selling many guitars to and chauffeuring around Dee Dee Ramone who had an apartment a block down from my house.

The Acoustic 320 amplifier is a vintage, solid-state bass amp head manufactured by the original Acoustic Control Corporation between 1978 and 1982. It is known for its powerful, full-frequency tone and was famously endorsed by bassists like Jaco Pastorius and John Paul Jones. Because the original company went out of business in the 1980s, the Acoustic 320 is no longer in production and is available only on the secondhand market. A later company revived the "Acoustic" brand and released new products, but the original 320 is sought-after for its specific tonal characteristics.
Key features
- Dual-channel preamp: The 320 features two switchable channels that can be run separately, combined, or blended for tonal variety. This layering capability is a unique and highly praised feature of the amp.
- Solid-state power: The amp is known for its "loud" 300 watts of solid-state power, which gives it a punchy, thick, mid-bass tone. The sound has been compared to a tube amp but with a quicker and more aggressive response.
- Graphic EQ: It includes a footswitchable 5-band graphic equalizer that can be assigned to one of the channels. Each channel also has its own standard treble, midrange, and bass controls.
- Rugged construction: It is built for live use with a robust build quality. Many vintage examples show cosmetic wear but remain in working order.
- Effects loop: An effects loop allows for patching in additional pedals between the preamp and power amp.
Specifications:
According to Reverb.com, the Acoustic 320 has the following specifications:
- Type: Solid-state bass head
- Channels: Twin-channel preamp
- Power:
- 300 watts RMS @ 2 ohms
- 225 watts RMS @ 4 ohms
- EQ:
- Treble, Mid, and Bass controls for each channel
- Footswitchable 5-band graphic EQ
- Inputs/Outputs:
- Dual inputs
- Effects loop
- Jack speaker outputs
- Weight: 15.8 kg (about 34.8 lbs)
- Dimensions: 69 x 27 x 16 cm (about 27.2 x 10.6 x 6.3 inches)
Tone and sound
- Character: Players describe the tone as powerful, punchy, and thick, with a distinct vintage character. It is praised for its ability to produce a massive, full-frequency sound, suitable for bassists in heavier bands.
- Channel blending: A key sonic feature is the ability to blend the two independent channels. You can set one channel for a distorted tone and the other for a clean tone and layer them together without them bleeding into each other, creating a large, unique sound.
- Midrange growl: When pushed, the amp produces a midrange grind and growl that is highly desired by many bassists.
