Some guitars just have 'vibe written all over them. This is one of them. This almost 40 year old Les Paul Custom is all original. Somewhere along the road one of the 4 Gibson CTS pots was changed but replaced with an identical 1987 pot as seen in the cavity picture. It came with the cavity shield that had been taken off and was never put back on. That pictured metal cavity cover had no screws but comes with the guitar.

Cosmetically the guitar has a stunning overall very clean cool look. It is a bit rough around the edges as seen in the many pictures but has had 'no' repairs and is structurally a very solid instrument. The frets are in great condition showing only the very lightest marks on the top of the frets from the strings but no pitting or real wear. Yes that is a rosewood fretboard and that is grain you see not wear.

Maybe you can rub out the serious guitar strap stains. I did not have much luck with that.

As always I cleaned and seasoned the rosewood fretboard installing a fresh set of Ernie Ball .10-.46 strings and the guitar tuned right up and chimed out nice and loud not even plugged in to an amplifier. What I call a ringer!

The neck has a great medium-chunky feel. Not the thinner 60's profile yet not the chunky fatter baseball bat thickness. The digital caliper reads .836 at the first fret & .946 at the 12th. fret. The nut width is 1 11/16" wide. All in all just a great feeling neck in my book.

All the electronics have been cleaned and working flawlessly and yes, this beauty is ready to pick up and play. Check out the included video!

Key Notes on 1987 Models

  • Tim Shaw PAFs: These late-'80s pickups are highly prized for their tonal accuracy to 1950s PAFs, often found in this era.
  • Condition: Many Alpine White models from this period exhibit significant lacquer yellowing/creaming and potential checking, widely considered desirable.

While Gibson Les Paul Customs typically featured ebony fretboards during the 1980s, it is possible for a 1987 model to have a rosewood fretboard, though it is not common for the standard Custom line. Rosewood was frequently used on Les Paul Standards, Specials, and certain Studio models in 1987.

  • Standard Custom Specs: Most 1987 Les Paul Customs came with ebony fretboards, particularly in Alpine White or Ebony finishes.
  • Variations: Due to changing materials in the post-Norlin era (starting around 1986), variations in fretboard woods occurred.

NOTE: Too cool. We just shipped very recently in the last few months a 1967 MapleGlo Rickenbacker 6-12 Converter 'comb' guitar to Billy Corigan of Smashing Pumpkins! We also then shipped a vintage 50 watt Marshall head to L.A. studio-touring guitarist extraodinaire, Michael Landau, and 2 vintage guitars to Jack White's organization down in Nashville just a few days before his 50th. birthday! mmm? Add 'The Kentucky Head Hunters' to the list, just sold Greg a cool little 50's Valco tube combo amp!

Gordy's Music has become a Detroit institution! Our shop was used as a filming location for a few films like "Miracle in Motor City" a Christmas movie on Lifetime (featuring Smoky Robinson). We've supplied gear for movies including "Bill & Ted Face The Music" with Keanu Reeves. We've got decades of celebrity customers, including recent visits from Beck, Eric Johnson, and we recently sold Billy Joel's bassist a cool Gibson SG he is in love with. One day a while back Andre 3000 and his group stopped in to browse as they were playing Masonic Temple that night and right after that we sold an old oil can Morley Wah Vibrato pedal to Credence Clearwater Revival's thee John Fogerty!

We are having and have had a lot of fun here at Gordy's Music! I was just remembering about 35 years ago a tour bus pulled up to our little shop, and who rolls right in and hangs out for an hour? Lenny Kravitz and his entire group, right about the same time I was selling many guitars to and chauffeuring around Dee Dee Ramone who had an apartment a block down from my house.
