The SG Standard '61 is Gibson's most accurate modern production reissue of the original 1961 SG — small teardrop pickguard, slim taper neck, bound rosewood fingerboard, and a mahogany body with the deeply sculpted beveling that defines the early SG silhouette. This limited edition variant adds the Lyre Maestro Vibrola tailpiece, gold hardware throughout, and T-Type humbuckers — a combination that was produced in a limited run and has since been discontinued.

The Maestro Vibrola is the tailpiece that appeared on the earliest SGs from 1961–63, with the ornate lyre engraving on the cover. It delivers subtle pitch movement rather than the dramatic range of a full vibrato system — expressive and characterful without pulling the guitar out of tune. The T-Type pickups are Gibson's take on the original Patent Applied For humbuckers: warm, dynamic, and responsive to playing dynamics in a way that higher-output modern pickups are not.

In Ebony with gold hardware, this is one of the more visually striking SG variants Gibson has offered. At 3.08 kg it is light even by SG standards — a direct result of the thin all-mahogany construction.
