The Gibson SG Standard first appeared in 1961, introducing a lighter, more streamlined take on the Les Paul design with improved upper fret access and a sharper, more aggressive body shape. It quickly became one of Gibson’s most recognisable models, offered in several variants including the Junior, Special, Custom, and the Standard.

As production moved through the mid 1960s, Gibson began making subtle changes to improve playability, including a narrower nut width. By late 1965 this resulted in what is commonly known as the slimmer neck profile, giving the guitar a faster and more compact feel in the hands.

This 1965 SG Standard sits right in that transition. Finished in Cherry, it presents in beautiful condition for its age, showing only minor player wear with light blemishes and some finish checking across the body and neck. It retains its original Kluson Deluxe double line tuners and is fitted with the Maestro Vibrola, with the original hard shell case also included.

Electronically, the guitar is fitted with four original 1965 dated potentiometers and its original Gibson patent sticker pickups, delivering the clear, open response these guitars are known for, with all electronics functioning as expected.

The guitar has had a professional refret at some point in its life, resulting in excellent playability while preserving the feel of the original neck.

In the hands the neck feels comfortable and easy to navigate, and combined with the lighter weight the guitar has a very natural playing feel. Overall, it is a strong, well-presenting example of a mid-1960s SG Standard that balances originality with practical usability.
