Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.
You are looking at a very unique Astatic model K2S model crystal microphone from the 1950's that comes with the unique built in lower on / off switch adapter as well as the period Astatic detachable E6G model desk stand.
Pic # 2 is from my 1940's era Astatic microphone catalog and shows the mics specs and cost of the regular K2. You don't come across this model very often and she's a real gem. It should be noted that the mic has been tested and the original crystal element no longer works so this should be used as a display, prop or repair piece.
The K2 was manufactured by Astatic in Youngstown, Ohio and was to be used as a public address mic as it's non-directional. It was a very odd design but has a beautiful industrial flair to it making it different from almost any other microphone made in the past century. The top of the mic shows it's model type and it's very legible. The K2 model mic usually attaches to a unique Astatic 3 pin adapter but this K2S has the built in Astatic on / off switch adapter with the making this even harder to come by. The K2S was quite a bit more expensive than the more common K2 model.
The mic no longer works but one could always retrofit another crystal or even dynamic element if needed. I have done this in the past. I know the perfect dynamic element for this mic.
The polished chrome body is free of any deep scratches, corrosion or dents. Just a few very lite scratches that hard to see at any distance.. The mesh screen is just as nice. No tarnish or dents. I would rate the cosmetic condition a conservative 9 out of 1 - 10.
The mic comes with a period Astatic E6G model desk stand from the 1950's era and perfect for this vintage microphone. It provides a very stable lite weight platform. There is just lite wear on the painted wood riser and the paint is original. The original painted base is just as nice. No dents or fractures either. A couple scratches and scuff marks.
I'd rate the E6G an easy 7 + on a scale of 1 - 10 if not better.
As you can see the wood riser screws into the mic as usual but the riser also detaches from the base with a half twist allowing the user to walk around with the mic. The handle is very practical in this way. The handle is held into the base via tension when you twist it back on.
The base still has it's original 3 rubber pads on the bottom and they are in great condition.
Total height with the K2S on top of the stand is appx 10 1/4 inches high X 5 inches wide.
A very nice piece that will draw attention anywhere it's shown. If you demand a very nice K2S mic that few others have then this is your girl.
As with all my vintage microphones for sale...
