Gibson ES-355 Memphis VOS – 2016 – Cherry Red – Bigsby – ‘57 Classics – COA (CME Custom)

The ES-355 represents the top of Gibson’s ES line, combining classic semi-hollow tone with premium appointments and striking visual presence. This is a 2016 Gibson Memphis ES-355 VOS, built as a Custom Shop-style reissue inspired by the original 1964 ES-355, with period-correct aesthetics and modern playability.

Finished in 60’s Cherry Red, this example stands out with a lighter, more vibrant hue than most other cherry reds I have seen, almost a bit of orange, giving it a unique vintage-style appearance while retaining the subtle aging of Gibson’s VOS treatment. It presents like a well-preserved vintage instrument without heavy relicing.

Originally a custom spec order through Chicago Music Exchange, this is a rare Memphis-built example from before the factory’s closure in 2019. I have been told this run may have been limited to approximately 100 units worldwide, although I have not independently verified that. Regardless, clean Memphis ES-355s of this quality are becoming increasingly difficult to find.

The guitar is in excellent condition and has been well cared for. The VOS finish presents beautifully, with only a few minor cosmetic marks on the back and around the strap area from normal use. Nothing structural or through the finish. It plays cleanly across the neck and delivers the rich, articulate tone expected from a high-end ES-355.

Specifications include a laminated maple/poplar/maple semi-hollow body with solid center block, a comfortable rounded neck profile, and a bound Richlite fingerboard with large block mother-of-pearl inlays. The headstock features the classic split-diamond inlay and multi-ply binding. Hardware is gold throughout, including Grover Rotomatic tuners, ABR-1 bridge with brass saddles, bone nut, and a factory Bigsby B-7 vibrato.

The guitar is equipped with Gibson ‘57 Classic humbuckers, offering warm, balanced vintage tone with clarity and excellent dynamic response. This is a versatile instrument equally suited for jazz, blues, and rock.

The original Gibson case is included and functions perfectly, with some exterior wear from storage. The original Certificate of Authenticity is also included.

The guitar has recently been professionally serviced and set up, ensuring it plays cleanly and comfortably across the entire neck with excellent action and intonation. It is currently strung with D’Addario XT light gauge coated strings, providing great feel, tuning stability, and extended string life. This is a fully dialed-in, turnkey example that requires nothing further — ready to be enjoyed immediately, whether on stage, in the studio, or as a standout piece in a collection.
