With the junior version of the Route 66 recently announced, here’s the real thing: the original when it comes to thick, Bluesbreaker-inspired tone. This rare set includes a Dr. Z Route 66 head (110V US version), the Dr. Z Z Best closed-back 2x12 cabinet, and the matching Dr. Z Airbrake attenuator.

Dr. Z Route 66

The Route 66 is a 32-watt boutique all-tube guitar amplifier known for its incredibly rich, harmonically complex tone often described as “milkshake thick.” It delivers outstanding overdrive even without pedals, while also being widely regarded as one of the best pedal platforms available.

The amp is an original design by Dr. Z and uses KT66 power tubes, famously associated with the Marshall JTM45 and the legendary Eric Clapton Bluesbreaker tone.

The preamp features an EF86 pentode tube, providing huge gain reserves, exceptional touch sensitivity, and remarkable clarity more commonly associated with high-end audio equipment.

Control layout is intentionally minimalist with Volume, Bass, and Treble. However, the tone controls are highly interactive, shaping both gain structure and midrange response. Past the 12 o’clock position they effectively act as a gain boost, making the amp extremely dynamic.

The Route 66 is often praised for its “piano-like clarity with endless sustain.” Even at higher gain levels, the low end remains tight and well defined. Thanks to its headroom and circuit design, it integrates drive pedals exceptionally well and is widely considered a top-tier pedal platform.

Dr. Z Z Best 2x12 Cabinet

The Z Best 2x12 is built using the Thiele design principle, delivering impressive punch and projection. It’s well known for providing much of the low-end depth and punch of a 4x12 cabinet in a more compact enclosure.

This cabinet is loaded with the original Celestion Vintage 30 and Celestion G12H 70th Anniversary speakers.

Dr. Z Airbrake Attenuator

Included is the Dr. Z Airbrake, a passive attenuator built under license from Trainwreck. It allows you to run the amp wide open to achieve natural tube saturation while reducing the output to manageable levels for home or studio use.
