Listed for sale is my 1969 E.R. Pfretzschner Model 301/C 4/4 violin, featuring my custom hand carved “Ace of Spades” bridge. This instrument is ideal for intermediate players seeking an affordable European violin with a warm and mature tone.
This violin is crafted in West Germany and adjusted at the Scherl & Roth workshop, comprising of selected European tonewoods; tight grained spruce top, broad flamed maple back, maple ribs and scroll, ebony board and fittings. The setup consists of my custom hand carved "Ace of Spades" design with extended lungs (to enhance overtones) that is cut on a quality European maple bridge, a tulip tailpiece with two German fine tuners, ebony chin rest, and Caspari pegs, and a spruce soundpost, which has been readjusted to increase tonal projection and clarity.
I've paried this violin with newly strung D'Addario Zyex strings, known for stability and providing a warm and rich tone. This violin produces clear and warm tone with moderate overtone and moderate projection.
The condition is good for its age (over 50 years), with some wear and tear and some cosmetic flaw, such as battle scars to varnish, varnish chip, slight scratches and nicks. These cosmetic flaws do not affect the tone at all.
Please note: I prefer to keep the violin in its current condition, with “battle scars”, as each imperfection adds character, similar to patina on a vintage car. The proper method would be a French polish, and while I know how, I’ve chosen not to. The process involves sanding and applying multiple layers of varnish and shellac, which can ultimately alter the natural tone.
This will come with a classic E.R. Pfretzschner case, a new Brazilwood bow of good quallity, and new shoulder rest.
Please let me know if you have any questions or if you need me to provide additional images for further inspection.
Please note that this item is sold as-is.

What does adjusted and upgraded mean?
For appearance: physical components are replaced such as pegs, tailpiece, chinrest and etc.
For tonal improvement: new bridge cut, bridge tuning, new sound post measured, cut, and repositioned, and new strings replaced. The effort and time spent to improve these structural changes will significantly enhance tonal quality.
For comfort: nut height, strings spacing and strings height will be remeasured and recut. Sometimes the neck needs to be shaven thinner. Fingerboard sometimes needs re-planing.
*** A final inspection will be thoroughly given prior to shipping. All necessary compounds will be applied to prevent future slippage, stickiness, and reducing strings friction. This is to ensure a peace of mind.
All of my instruments have been stored in a controlled room with the right humidity and temperature. Every single instrument is treated with the utmost care. ***
