Attention fans of The Beatles and vintage guitar collectors. Up for sale is one of the most iconic electric guitars of the 1950s—the legendary Gretsch Duo Jet in classic black.
This 1957 example stands out as a particularly desirable year, easily identified by its distinctive hump-block fingerboard inlays. It’s also famously associated with George Harrison, who played a 1957 Duo Jet (model 6128) during the early years of The Beatles through roughly 1963.
Equipped with original DeArmond Dynasonic pickups, this guitar captures the unmistakable tone Gretsch was known for in the early ’50s—just before the introduction of Filter’Tron humbuckers the following year. The result is a clear, punchy, and dynamic sound that defines an era.
What truly sets this piece apart is its provenance. Included are the original Gretsch Guarantee Certificate, its envelope, and the original 1957 bill of sale—an incredibly rare and valuable set of documents that elevate this instrument from vintage guitar to a true collector’s piece.
Condition
This guitar is listed in good condition, which is appropriate for an instrument of its age. At approximately 66 years old, it shows honest wear consistent with decades of use. The body exhibits finish checking, light discoloration, and some small chips.
The wiring appears to have been updated at some point, however the pots and controls look to be original to the guitar. The instrument has been fully tested and is in proper working order.
The binding remains intact and is in good shape overall. There are also some filled holes at the very end of the body, as shown clearly in the photos.
The Bigsby unit has been replaced with a brand new B70. Additionally, the guitar has just been professionally refretted, and the fretboard has been sanded to ensure excellent playability.
Overall, this instrument plays well and sounds fantastic, but it is clearly showing its age in all the right, honest ways. Please take the time to carefully review all photos for exact condition details.
This is more than just a guitar—it’s a genuine slice of music history and a standout addition to any serious collection.
Feel free to reach out with any questions or for additional photos.
