"The Golden Unicorn" 1990 Gibson SST 12-String

The SST (Solid Spruce Top) was revolutionary because it allowed players to achieve a true acoustic chime at stadium-level volumes without the feedback typical of hollow bodies.

Model History: Introduced in 1987 as a collaboration with legendary guitarist Chet Atkins. The 12-string version (SST 12) is much rarer than its 6-string counterpart, which was famously used by artists like Dave Matthews, Lindsey Buckingham, and Gregg Allman.

The "Gold Top" Finish: Standard finishes for 1990 included Natural, Ebony, White, and Wine Red. A Gold Top finish on an SST is virtually unheard of in official catalogs. It brings the iconic aesthetic of the 1950s Les Paul to a high-performance acoustic-electric.

Construction:

Body: Chambered Mahogany body. This makes the guitar lightweight despite its solid appearance.

Neck & Board: Mahogany neck with a premium Ebony fingerboard and Mother of Pearl star inlays.

** There is a small separation on the back of the headstock/ neck. This does not cuase and playability issues what so ever!

Electronics & Hardware

Pickup System: Features an under-saddle bridge transducer manufactured by L.R. Baggs for Gibson.

Rarity

The SST series was discontinued in 2006, and the 12-string variants have become highly sought after by collectors and performers who need "feedback-free" acoustic tones. A standard SST 12-string in excellent condition is significant, but a unique finish like a Gold Top elevates this into "museum-grade" or "high-tier collector" territory!

This was the era of Gibson's Nashville production the build quality on these early 90s SSTs is generally considered superior to later production runs.
