Rare Fender Mustang, made in Japan for the Japanese market.
This example stands out immediately due to its factory-matching finish across body, neck, and headstock – not a refinish or aftermarket work, but a consistent factory-applied finish throughout the instrument. To the best of my knowledge, this is the only known Fender Mustang with this factory-matching body, neck, and headstock finish. In researching this model and finish, I have only been able to locate two other publicly documented examples, making this an exceptionally rare configuration.
Finished in Atomic Silver / Pewter Grey metallic (both names are used for this finish), the color shifts subtly toward greenish tones depending on the light, giving it a distinctive and unusual look compared to standard Mustang finishes.
Specs & Features
- Crafted in Japan (CIJ), serial number O0084946 – production period 1997–2000. CIJ O-series instruments from this period are associated with Fender Japan’s later production by Tokai and Dyna Gakki.
- 24” short-scale Mustang neck
- Factory-original pickups & electronics
- All switching and functions fully operational
- Neck pocket marking: MG69 (see photos)
- Intonated rubber bridge. Easy to swap between the metal bridge and rubber bridge in about 1 minute – simply loosen the strings, swap the bridge and retune
Rubber Bridge
A rubber bridge dampens the strings, creating a warm, muted and percussive tone with less sustain – a sound used by artists such as Bob Dylan, Phoebe Bridgers and Taylor Swift. Switching between the rubber and metal bridge gives this already versatile Mustang two distinctly different sonic characters.
- Individual saddles for precise intonation
- Height adjustment via the two mounting posts
- Rosewood base following the 7.25" fretboard radius
- High-quality rubber/silicone for a warm, muted tone
- Completely reversible
Condition
- Fully functional and structurally solid
- Cosmetic wear and dings consistent with age and use (see photos)
- Plays well with classic Mustang offset feel
- No structural issues or hidden modifications
