Offered here is an exceptionally rare and remarkably preserved 1959 Martin D-28E in true mint condition.

The D-28E occupies a fascinating and short-lived chapter in Martin history. Introduced in 1958 as one of Martin’s first attempts at producing an electric guitar, the D-28E was essentially a standard D-28 fitted at the factory with two DeArmond pickups and onboard controls. The model was discontinued shortly thereafter due to slow sales, making surviving examples highly collectible today.

Production & Rarity

In 1959, only 85 D-28E guitars were produced. Total production across all years (1958–1959) is believed to be approximately 302 instruments.

Because many were later converted back to standard acoustic specification, finding an original, unmodified example is difficult. Finding one in mint condition is exceptionally rare.

Condition

This example presents in mint condition — an extraordinary level of preservation for a guitar of this era. The finish remains vibrant with minimal signs of handling. The Brazilian rosewood displays beautiful grain and depth, and the top is clean with no cracks, repairs, or structural concerns.

The neck is straight, truss rod functions properly, and the guitar plays effortlessly.

Tone

Acoustically, it retains the rich, powerful dreadnought voice expected from a late-’50s Martin with Brazilian rosewood — deep piano-like bass, clear midrange, and articulate highs.

Plugged in, the DeArmond pickups deliver a uniquely woody, articulate electric tone that captures both acoustic resonance and vintage electric character — a sound famously embraced by players seeking something different in the late ’50s and early ’60s.

The 1959 D-28E is one of Martin’s most unusual and collectible vintage models. With only 85 produced that year and far fewer surviving in original, unmodified condition — especially in mint shape — this is a serious collector’s opportunity.
