This vintage 1968 Kustom K-200 Deluxe model features a very rare finish: Cherry Sunburst with a Matching Headstock!!! I have seen another one before-but they are pretty rare. What is really rare is how nice and clean this one is! The finish is in excellent condition and it has that killer vintage gloss and shine that new guitars just can't quite get right. This guitar was produced at the original Kustom factory in Chanute, Kansas U.S.A. sometime in 1968. It has been very well cared for its entire life. This guitar came out of an extraordinary collection of fine vintage guitars. The guitar is 100% original and has no cracks, no breaks, no repairs, no rewound pickups, no issues whatsoever. The K-200 Deluxe has been professionally set up and it is ready to go-it needs nothing.
The body is the familiar semi-hollow double cutaway with Cat-Eye sound hole reminiscent of the famous Rickenbacker guitars. The body and neck are constructed of Maple wood. The edges are rounded for a very comfortable touch. The body is super solid and very well-made. The finish is very beautiful and the woodgrain is fully visible underneath the translucent Cherry Sunburst. There is some mild flaming-see photos. There are a couple of pecks in the finish, mostly near the horns, along the sides-see photos. The face and back are really clean. The vintage lacquer has that nice soft gloss that makes the finish look wet on the high spots. The color is unfaded and presents very strongly, probably the nicest one of these I have seen in 40 years. The neck joint is solid and the neck fitment is an excellent fit.
The neck itself is smooth as glass and perfectly straight. It has a Vintage Slim-C shaped profile and measures 1.60" wide at the nut. The neck depth measures .661" at the 1st fret and .840" at the 12th fret. The original Kluson Deluxe tuners all function well and the guitar holds tune excellent. The headstock and Logo display excellent with killer Sunburst effect. This is an early-style headstock before the horn-tips were exaggerated. The Rosewood fingerboard is super clean and has a nice soft feel. The Diamond-Dot position markers look really cool and provide a unique look. The white binding is nice and clean and really sets off the fingerboard nicely with a very upscale appearance. The frets have been professionally leveled, crowned and polished and appear like new condition-see photos. The action is set low for an easy playing experience. The string height is currently set at .010" at the 1st fret and .055" at the 12th fret. It is easily raised via the adjustable bridge if you prefer a higher action. As it is-it plays like butter with a soft touch all up and down the fingerboard. There are no dead spots anywhere.
The original DeArmond Dynasonic pickups are the same model as used on Gretsch guitars of the 1950's. They have an excellent signal and balance. They have the characteristic clear tone with shimmering brilliance and a full low-end. Some people say these sound like supercharged Telecaster pickups. The bridge position measures 11.43 ohms and the neck position measures 11.56 ohms. The controls and wiring harness are in excellent condition and everything works smoothly and quietly. The original potentiometers date to 1968.
The guitar is very lightweight, it only weighs 7.13 lbs! It is super comfortable to hold whether on a strap or in your lap. It has a nice balance and just feels right. The quality on these early Kustom guitars is really amazing. The employees certainly took their time making these instruments and the sense of Kansas pride and workmanship is everywhere. The guitar is right at home in the studio, on stage or even just plinking on the couch-it feels nice and resonant even when not plugged in!. Comes complete with original Kustom form-fit hardcase for protection, of course.
