The Collings 001A 14-Fret is a focused, responsive small-body guitar built for players who care about nuance, clarity, and dynamic control. With its Adirondack spruce top and figured mahogany back and sides, this instrument delivers the dry, woody punch you expect from a great 00, but with added headroom and complexity thanks to the Adirondack’s power and stiffness.

Built under Collings’ Standard Series construction and voicing, it features Sitka spruce braces in a pre-war scalloped X pattern. The result is a lively top that responds immediately to a light touch, yet stays composed when you lean in. Fingerstyle players will appreciate the separation and articulation, while flatpickers will find surprising authority and projection from its compact 18 7/8 inch body.

The figured mahogany adds visual depth and tonal warmth. Expect a strong midrange presence, quick note decay, and that classic mahogany “thump” that records beautifully and sits perfectly in a mix. At just 3 pounds 15 ounces, it is incredibly comfortable in the lap and effortless over long sessions.

The Honduran mahogany neck is carved in a Modified V profile, offering a substantial but refined feel that encourages proper hand position without slowing you down. A 1 3/4 inch nut width and 2 3/16 inch bridge spacing provide ample room for clean fingerstyle work, while the 24 7/8 inch scale length keeps string tension relaxed and inviting. The compound 14 to 26 inch radius fingerboard ensures smooth playability all the way up the neck.

Appointments are classic and tasteful: tortoise body binding and pickguard, 1-Style top purfling, walnut backstrip, and a 1-Style wood rosette. The stained exotic ebony peghead veneer with MOP Collings logo, square peghead with volute, and nickel Waverly tuners complete the vintage-inspired aesthetic. Ebony fingerboard and belly bridge are paired with abalone dot pins and a drop-in bone saddle for optimal tone transfer and long-term reliability.

Structurally, Collings’ mortise and tenon hybrid neck joint and fully adjustable truss rod ensure stability and precision. Finished in high gloss nitrocellulose lacquer on both body and neck, this guitar will continue to open up and mature with time.

Strung with D’Addario EJ-16 strings and housed in a deluxe hardshell case, this 001A 14-Fret is a serious player’s instrument. It rewards intention, exposes nuance, and delivers a refined small-body voice that stands on its own in any collection.
