Vintage Kay-built archtop guitar, made in Chicago in the early–mid 1950s and sold under a house brand (no headstock logo). This is a well-used, well-worn survivor that still has a lot of vibe and musical usefulness, but it is firmly player grade and priced accordingly.
The guitar shows numerous cracks to the top and back, including center seam cracks and additional age-related splits. These appear stable and consistent with the construction and age of Kay archtops from this period, but they are clearly visible and should be expected on an instrument like this. Finish wear, dings, and scratches are present throughout.
A single pickup was added at some point in the guitar’s life and is not original. The installation is functional but clearly a modification, with mounting hardware visible on the back of the body. The guitar amplifies properly and passes signal. Electronics work, though the pots are scratchy, and the tone control does not appear to have an audible effect.
Playability is better than expected for its age: the action is comfortable, though there is buzzing on notes past the 12th fret, likely due to fret wear and age-related neck geometry. It plays and sounds best in the lower and middle registers and would suit blues, jazz, slide, or roots styles well, or as a candidate for further setup or electronics work.
This is not a collector-grade instrument. It is an honest vintage archtop with character, history, and limitations. Sold as-is, fully described, and priced to reflect condition.
