Beyerdynamic M64 1960’s refurbished mic with new pigtail!

A true sleep studio gem of a mic. Full frequency response, fantastic shape. Totally rebuilt and serviced! Has all original guts (diaphragm, connector and transformer) but all new rewiring! New pigtail, fully serviced. Sounds phenomenal actually. If you’re looking for something new that yields a clean but warm and unique sound no one else has, you found it.

Uber rare to find them with Tuchel pigtail because they were usually taken for other AKG or German mics back in the day. This one sounds fantastic. Bottom connector glue had failed and had fallen off decades ago and wires got torn at the Tuchel end (an easy fix for us). It was all there in the box when I recieved it. Professionally rebuilt with high quality leaded Kester brand solder and professional shrink tubing for decades of reliability.

Note that in the last picture is a shot of the inside of the brand new New Old Stock Weet German Tuchel Connector. I actually found a guy who had a 1960’s Tuchel connector for this mic sealed in a 65 year old box for sale! Notice that it is mint and like new. No oxygen got to the plastic either, just a fantastic example of old world tech, made new with a Nuetrik style XLR-M connector on the other end.

Beyerdynamic M 64 is a Vintage German dynamic with classic midrange focus and broadcast-grade intelligibility. This Beyerdynamic M 64 is one of those under-the-radar vintage German dynamics that delivers exactly what you want when you need a source to sound clear, forward, and controlled, without modern condenser hype or harshness. Originally built for speech and high-intelligibility applications (the classic “Richtmikrofon” era of Beyer), the M 64 has the tight, purposeful voicing that made these microphones staples in broadcast, PA, and institutional audio—then and now.

In a modern studio, that same voicing becomes a secret weapon: it sits in a mix instantly, holds presence without fizz, and brings a “finished” midrange that works great when a source needs to cut through dense instrumentation.

Purpose / original application:

The M 64 was designed primarily for speech pickup and directional reinforcement—the kind of microphone made to keep voices articulate in real-world environments, not just in perfect studio acoustics. 

Where it shines in a modern studio:

• Vocals (character mic): great when you want a slightly “radio” forwardness that stays smooth
• Guitar cab: focused mids that translate well in rock mixes
• Snare / percussion: punchy, controlled pickup without brittle top
• Room rejection situations: useful in imperfect rooms because it’s directional and tight

Frequency response: 100 Hz – 10 kHz 

(This range is part of why it works so well for intelligibility-heavy sources and mid-forward tracks.)

When it was released:

The M 64 appears in Beyer’s older catalog-era microphone line, commonly associated with mid-century / early vintage Beyerdynamic product generations. Exact first-year release is not consistently documented online in one authoritative place, but it’s firmly from the classic early Beyer dynamic “M-series” period and shows up in historical reference catalogs/spec listings.
