The BB Series is Yamaha’s flagship electric bass line, proudly representing one of Japan’s most respected global brands.
Beloved by musicians around the world for decades, this series is renowned for its proprietary design and exceptionally thick, powerful PJ sound. Today, the BB Series has become so iconic that it would not be an exaggeration to call it the very definition of a PJ bass.

This particular instrument is Made in Japan, and its quality is beyond question.
While it features the classic alder body, Yamaha takes things a step further. By laminating maple between layers of alder to create a three-ply body construction, the bass achieves richer midrange response and faster note attack. In addition, Yamaha’s proprietary I.R.A. (Initial Response Acceleration) treatment is applied. After assembly, the instrument is subjected to controlled vibrations, allowing it to resonate as if it has been played and broken in for years—despite being brand new. This process enhances the overall cohesion of the instrument, resulting in a deeper, more expressive tone.

Yamaha’s unique engineering philosophy is evident throughout the instrument.
In addition to the four screws that vertically secure the neck from the back of the body, Yamaha employs Miter Bolting, which fastens the neck end at a 45-degree angle. This creates an exceptionally tight neck-to-body joint, delivering increased resonance and sustain. Furthermore, the string-through-body system feeds the strings through the body at a 45-degree angle rather than straight through, ensuring that string vibrations are transmitted efficiently throughout the entire instrument. These thoughtful design details exemplify Yamaha’s meticulous attention to craftsmanship.

The signature PJ pickup layout that defines the BB Series features original Yamaha pickups equipped with powerful Alnico V magnets. This combination delivers a solid low-end core and a thick, punchy midrange characteristic of the classic PJ sound. Each pickup performs exceptionally well on its own, not just in blended settings—clear evidence of a truly versatile and high-quality instrument.

Packed with the precision, refinement, and carefully engineered details that Japanese craftsmanship is known for, the BB Series has captivated countless musicians over the years. This is a highly sought-after model among players both in Japan and around the world.
