Peter Coombe Classical Flattop Mandolin

I am reluctantly selling a lovely Peter Coombe Classical Flattop Mandolin in excellent+ condition.  For those unfamiliar, Peter Coombe is an Australian luthier making outstanding Gibson and Lyon and Healy inspired mandolins.  These mandolins come up rarely for sale.

What makes this Coombe extra special is the combination of red spruce (Adirondack) top and striking Tasmanian Tiger Myrtle back and sides.  Beside looking beautiful, to my ear this wood combo and Peter’s design produces a louder, cleaner and sweeter sound than common for flattop mandolins.  This one is loud with a strong ring and sustain and excellent clarity in the mids and treble. Mahogany neck, Ebony fingerboard (12in radius, 30mm wide at the nut), 

13 3/4-inch scale length, Rubner polished brass tuners with Ebony knobs and ebony adjustable Brekke flattop bridge. The fingerboard marker dots are red opal, and the headstock logo is European Maple wood.  Price includes a well-fitting hardshell case. Extra set of recommended D’Addario flat top EFJ74 strings also included.  Comes with a Cumberland ebony armrest and a ToneGard Sunrise (an extra $140 value).

“These models are based on the Lyon and Healy mandolins and they are constructed very similar to the Lyon and Healy/Washburn mandolins.  There are some differences, primarily to keep costs under control.  For example, there is no scroll headstock, and the tailpiece is simpler… 

The Classical Flattop mandolins are remarkably good sounding for a flat top mandolin.  The proof is in the sound clips.  I have spent much time researching how to make a great sounding flat top mandolin, and with the second generation of these mandolins that use some guitar construction principles, have achieved the goal.  They are fun to play, sound really great, and are lighter and less bulky than an arched top mandolin, and because the top is much lighter, are quite a bit louder.  This is a popular model.”  

I am the original owner, ordered directly from Peter, and kept it in a climate controlled, smoke free environment with a Boveda humidipak.  I am sadly parting with this beauty to pay off post-Hurricane Helena expenses. 3-day inspection period.
