This Martin D-18 is a beauty that has all the tone, feel, and magic that makes these prewar models so desirable. It has been fully restored by Dave's Guitar Shop head luthier Carl Meine and plays great with low action (6/64" bass side at the 12th fret, 4/64" treble side). The frets are in excellent shape with no wear. The guitar is overall in great condition with wear typical from use and some holes drilled into the back of the headstock. There are faint outlines in the top on both sides of the soundhole of previously removed pickguards that covered almost all of both upper bouts. The following notes have been provided by Carl in regards to the restoration work done:

  • Multiple prior attempts at a back replacement resulted in chattered and shortened blocks, kerfed lining, and bottom edge of the sides. What remained of the destroyed lining was carefully removed and replaced with correct geometry linings.
  • Mahogany was grafted onto the neck and tailblock to bring the depth of the guitar to its original dimensions. The jagged edge of the side was flushed up and thin strip of grain matched mahogany was laminated around the perimeter of the sides paralleling the binding channel.
  • A new replica back was made to the same specs as an adjacent guitar in our possession (D18#75510). The wood species, center strip, radius, brace dimensions and method of construction were all accounted for.
  • Several hairline side cracks emanating from the tailblock and ending at the first cloth strip were cleated.
  • While the top finish remains original, the finish of the sides was not. The back and sides were then finished at the same time using nitrocellulose lacquer and hand polished to a low gloss mimicking the patina of the original top finish.
  • A lacquered replica celluloid pickguard was added. The original bridge was reglued, the neck reset, and new period correct frets were installed.

It comes with an unoriginal hard shell case in good condition.
