TEISCO BS-101 JAPAN 1960s SHORT-SCALE BASS

Probably from around 1965 this little lad is guaranteed to bring a smile to the mug of even the grumpiest bassist (or non-bassist).

Genuinely short scale, it's about the same length as a guitar with a scale of 25". Of course these were never intended to rival a long scale bass. They were purportedly aimed at guitarists wishing to make bassier noises. Make of that what you will...

However, thanks to its super single gold foil pickup this wee chap pumps out the most outrageous vintage thump. It's low output as many of these old foil pickups are but with a brilliant frequency response.

Cosmetically this has a few bumps and shoves which we have endeavoured to show as brutally as possible in the photos.

All-original hardware. Unusually for a BS-101 this has a kill switch factory fitted. It was a bit temperamental too so it's just been renewed while our tech gave it a full set up. This is the only replacement part we can find.

The excellent 'Zero fret' is often not present on these short scale 101 fingerboards but this too is original. Quirky all round this fellow.

Rosewood fingerboard is in very nice condition, nut is good and the 23 fat frets including the zero fret, have loads of life in them. This one sports the original 3 + 1 tuners on the headstock, as opposed to the far less quirky inline versions.

The steel bridge is a very basic affair with simple 2-saddle adjustment for intonation and height.

These are the original Teisco knobs and even rarer than rare, the original bridge cover - albeit with a touch of corrosion to the chrome. There is even some mute foam still attached.

The pictured strings are old but these vintage tape wounds really add to the period woodiness so we chose to leave them on for the pro setup.

And top of the bill of course, that lovely original gold foil pickup.

The Japan post office service (EMS) is reliable and efficient but shipping costs from Japan to Europe or the states are unavoidably expensive.

Consequently there is no guarantee that an instrument arrives with exactly the same set up as stated. After a period of acclimatisation, you may still need to make any adjustments at your own expense.
