Follows description from Equipboard:
The Maxon PT-909 Phase Tone is a vintage, all-analog phaser effects pedal from the late 1970s and early 1980s, known for its warm, smooth, and subtle modulation. It was also produced and distributed under the Ibanez brand name during a slightly latter period.
Key Features and Description
- Effect Type: The PT-909 is a phaser, a type of modulation effect that creates a "swooshing" or "swirling" sound by filtering the input signal and creating peaks and troughs in the frequency spectrum.
- Circuitry: It utilizes a four-stage JFET analog circuit design, which contributes to its classic, vintage tone.
- Sound Profile: The pedal is celebrated for its warm sound that blends well with both clean and distorted guitar tones, offering subtle and vibrant phase effects rather than extreme, "in-your-face" warbly modulation. It is often compared to the MXR Phase 90.
- Controls: Unlike earlier or simpler phasers that might have only one "Rate" knob, the standard PT-909 features a three-knob setup for greater versatility:
- Speed (Rate): Controls the rate (speed) of the phase effect's oscillation.
- Width (Depth): Adjusts the depth or amplitude of the modulation sweep.
- Feedback: Feeds a portion of the effected signal back through the circuit, increasing the intensity and resonance of the effect.
- Construction: The pedal has a distinctive orange casing and is noted for its robust, durable "standard box" construction (later versions were heavier and sturdier than early "narrow box" models).
- Power: Most versions require a standard 9V DC power supply (3.5mm, center positive) or a 9V battery, though very early "narrow box" versions only ran on battery power.
- Vintage Status: As a vintage pedal made in Japan, it is a sought-after collector's item and is well-regarded by guitarists for its authentic 70s analog sound.
