The brainchild of EarthQuaker Devices and Idles guitarist Lee Kiernan, the Gary automatic pulse width modulation fuzz/overdrive pedal offers a destructive yet diverse dichotomy of distortion to give guitarists an exceptional palette for sonic conjuring. With the right switch devoted to fearsome fuzz tone finessing and the left switch reserved for more organic overdrive sculpting, the Gary pedal poses plenty of crunchy chaos across a range of intensities befitting metal, hard rock, punk, psych, blues, and beyond. Its vaguely named duet of per-switch parameters renders itself quite comprehensive when dialing in tones on the spot, with That’s It and Oosh acting as master volumes for each drive, while Go and Yes! respectively level gain and square wave envelope sensitivity. Run your drive and fuzz tones individually or simultaneously, and even connect an expression pedal for exciting pulse width control for inspiring live effects and studio takes. Two tones to consider

While the Gary pedal can easily blend distortion effects for unique results, it’s important to note its foundational starting points, starting on the right side. Here, you’ll find an angry and aggressive square wave fuzz effect, perfect for simulating subtle fuzz rips and massive blown amp properties, depending on your control preferences and degree of attack. Blues rock riffage, psychedelic sonic experiments, grungy growls, and more will feel right at home on the right side of the Gary pedal.

The left side diverges from such intensity, exuding more of that classic amp overdrive tone that’s just aching for sonic manipulation — a tribute to Lee’s favored area of tone chasing. Rebirthing the green channel’s effect from EarthQuaker’s original Gray Channel pedal, it’s here that guitarists gain access to the coveted classic crunch of natural distortion, creating a tone that bites without going totally feral. Detailed drive design

Once you’ve settled the distortion debate of drive or fuzz (or both!), it’s time to get some tonal vision with a quartet of controls. Oosh and That’s It are your volume controls for the right and left sides, respectively. Go takes the drive sound of the left side and turns up the op-amp gain, turning clean boosts and subtle clipping effects into wider, fuller, smoother organic distortion.

On the opposing side, Yes! dictates the sensitivity of the square wave fuzz’s envelope, remaining thick and classic when turned down with impressive sustain. Turn it up, and the Yes! control exhibits an interactive disposition, narrowing the pulse width the harder you play for a nasal result that all but disappears the further you turn the knob. For the best results in this realm, Gary sits most comfortably near the front of your chain.
