This is a 1983 Tokai EX-70, built during Tokai’s legendary lawsuit era, when the company produced instruments that many players still consider equal to—or better than—the American originals of the time.

The guitar is 100% original, beautifully crafted, and an outstanding example of early-’80s Japanese workmanship.

It has the unmistakable lively, woody resonance that only well-aged tonewoods develop. Acoustically it is loud, resonant and responsive, with excellent sustain and a rich, open voice. Plugged in, it delivers everything you would expect from a great vintage Explorer: punch, clarity and warmth.

Why this guitar is special

Natural-finish EX-70s appear only rarely on the market, especially in original condition. Collectors have long regarded these early Tokais as some of the finest Japanese-built guitars ever produced, and clean examples have become increasingly difficult to find.

This is not only a highly collectible instrument—it is also an exceptional player’s guitar.

Why I’m selling

I’m simply a fan of very large 1950s-style neck profiles. This guitar has a comfortable medium-round neck that many players will love, but I personally prefer substantially thicker necks. Otherwise it would absolutely stay in my collection.
