Hofner, the company most known for making Paul McCartney’s bass, has had a long history as a well respected archtop builder as well, and this Committee model, built as a one off for someone named “McSherry” in 1986, is a great example of that.
The Committee, named as such for its apocryphal design by multiple British guitarist in the 1950’s, is a large, 18” archtop that either was electrified with a laminate body, or in this case, a non-electric version with all solid construction.
Presumably built as a custom order, this guitar features a spruce top, nicely flamed maple back and sides, extra fancy binding and purfling, as well as custom inlays and a 5 piece neck, along with a very cool clear pickguard. The label reads “only 1”, with a serial number of “McSherry ‘0’”, denoting that it’s’ most likely a 1 of 1.
Zero nut, 10.5/16ths nut width, and a 25.5” scale.
