A J Bass As Unique As the Artist It’s Designed For
Laura Lee Ochoa is not only the bass player, but she also serves as a vocalist and founding member of Khruangbin, an electric guitar trio that blends diverse world music influences into an exotic, difficult-to-categorize hybrid genre that’s completely unique. Built to Laura’s exacting specifications, the Fender limited-edition Laura Lee Jazz Bass features a custom U-profile maple neck designed to facilitate the bassist’s equally unique playing style, which employs a left-hand muting technique borrowed from the double bass. Key to Laura’s sound are a pair of DiMarzio Ultra Jazz DP149 hum-cancelling pickups with stacked concentric controls. Other features include a classic J Bass offset-waist alder body, a rosewood fingerboard with a modern 9.5-inch radius, and vintage-style bridge/pickup covers. With its novel neck carve and powerful passive electronics, the Fender Limited-edition Laura Lee Jazz Bass provides off-the-charts playability and packs a mighty punch (noiselessly). It is a special run instrument, however, and won’t be around for long , Better Move Fast !
Powerful sonic payload
The DiMarzio Ultra Jazz DP149 hum-cancelling pickups in the Fender Laura Lee Jazz Bass may look like traditional J Bass pickups, but there’s a world of difference under the hood. Rather than the stacked coil arrangement commonly used to achieve humbucking operation while retaining a single-coil form factor, the Ultra Jazz uses dual side-by-side coils, each sensing a pair of strings — effectively an in-line split-coil configuration. Leveraging a hybrid magnetic structure that’s optimized to produce both vintage and modern tones, these ultra-versatile pickups deliver instantaneous response with thunderously deep lows, transparent and round midrange, and grinding percussive highs topped off by rich harmonic overtones that seem to leap right off the strings. Whether you play fingerstyle or with a pick, it’s a highly musical sound that’s eminently malleable using the instrument’s stacked concentric controls, which provide volume and tone adjustments for each pickup. Start with the neck pickup for a warm, punchy sound, dial in the bridge pickup for the perfect amount of aggressive growl to plow through the track, and you’re ready to rock.
It’s a J Bass
When all’s said and done, this artist signature instrument is a Jazz Bass, one of Leo Fender’s most iconic and enduring designs. Built for balance, comfort, and speed, the J Bass was radical when it was introduced, largely thanks to its ergonomic, offset-waist body, which moves left-side mass toward the neck in a way that aligns with the angle at which most bassists hold their instrument when standing. When playing seated, most (right-handed) players rest the guitar on their right thigh, and the offset design, in this case, aligns the rear body contour with your torso, where it belongs. Another significant feature of the Jazz Bass is its neck shape. The nut on a 4-string Jazz Bass neck is 1.5 inches wide, whereas most other 4-strings on the market have a nut width of 1.625 inches or more. This detail makes a world of difference in playing feel, particularly when playing in the low register — the meat and potatoes range. Jazz Bass aficionados like that the shorter distance between strings in the low register allows for greater dexterity and speed, as they don’t have to stretch as far to reach, say, a low G. This makes the Jazz Bass better suited to players with smaller hands. The Jazz Bass neck profile, normally quite rounded, features a slightly fuller U-shape carve for this artist model, which many players will find advantageous for a variety of fretting techniques.
