The BC-1 is a highly expressive MIDI device that captures the musician’s breath pressure and converts it into continuous MIDI controller data—primarily MIDI CC#2 (Breath Control). This allows players to modulate volume, timbre, vibrato, and other expressive parameters in real time for more dynamic performances.

It was typically used with:

• Yamaha DX series (DX7, DX100, DX11)
• Yamaha CS-01 (also seen as CS01)
• Yamaha VL series (VL1 and VL70-m)

These devices accepted breath dynamics through a 1/4" connector labeled "Breath" on the hardware.

Features & Functionality

• Analogue sensor for breath pressure.
• Converts directly to MIDI CC#2 messages.
• Not dependent on specific synthesizer model—any module receiving MIDI CC#2 can accept data.
• Commonly used for real-time expressive control over attack, volume, modulation, and filters.
