Firefly Classic FFLPS SL3 2022 - Sunburst

Build quality of my 2022 Firefly FFLPS triple humbucker model is very good. Its solid mahogany body & set in neck weigh 8.6 pounds, as substantial as any Gibson Les Paul. It features a Tune-o-matic bridge with 6 adjustable saddles for fine tuning of intonation plus a stop tail that's anchored firmly into the mahogany body for excellent sustain. Neck is straight with a hint of relief and action is set medium low with no buzz on light gauge strings.

Firefly was one year into their new role as a large distributor of many new guitar series. No longer unavailable for long periods after limited inventory sold out too quickly. That was old biz model. Firefly's multiple new guitar series were available on their own website, no longer dependent on eBey or Amazon, with continuous improvements to quality control and frequent addition of new series and restock of old standards.

My early 2022 FFLPS has some slight blemishes: tiny dust pimples on top right bout, a few pinpoint dings on backside, a slight finish ripple at neck/body joint. But in general, the clearcoat finish is very good: smooth to the touch, no cloudiness or major scuffs, covering a dark brown stain that subtly reveals the rich mahogany grain texture and featuring a skillfully applied book-match flame maple cap with bold, well detailed flame striping that dances and morphs as one's angle of view shifts.

Straight mahogany neck with medium C profile is the Goldilocks fit, not too slim, not too fat. Scale length 24.75 inches allows for easier string bending. Rosewood fretboard has flat 14 inch radius and 22 well-finished bevel-end frets for smooth fret hand glides. Zero fret wear due to minimal play -- I rotate through a big collection! 42.7 mm wide bone nut enhances sustain. Generic Grover style tuners have smooth turn ratio and keep tuning stable. Guitar went unplayed for much of last year and rosewood fretboard got dried out in arid Arizona climate. I recently conditioned it with Music Nomad F-1 oil to expand the wood and give it a healthy sheen.

The FFLPS has an excellent control design that is great fun to experiment with.

The three-way pickup switch provides the following combinations of 3 humbuckers: Treble switch position combines bridge & middle. Middle switch position combines all 3 - bridge, middle & neck. Rhythm switch position combines neck & middle.

But there are three individual volume controls - one for each humbucker - plus a master tone control. Individual volume control for each humbucker allows the player 4 more options in addition to the basic 3 switching options: he/she can dial in each humbucker to be played solo OR neck combined with bridge for a unique bright, quacky tone. In addition, varying the percentage of each volume within the humbucker mix can add many shadings for even wider tonal variation. Firefly got it right with this control set up.

These ceramic humbuckers must be slightly underwound to have such creamy, lower output tone. To me their tone bespeaks vintage 1950s -- not too hot or too trebly or too muddy -- and there are notable differences in tone among the three. I really dig that neck + bridge quack! Guitar sounds sweet but can also rock pretty hard. These hummers do well on lower gain settings as for blues crunch or vintage rock'n'roll. They may get a bit noisy at very heavy gain as for Brit or glam rock or head banging punk, so noise control of some kind may be necessary.

Why am I selling this? The LP shape has never been my favorite so I'm slowly reducing back to my best 2 or 3 while holding on to my many Teles and SGs. I've discovered I prefer my 3-pickup guitars to have single coils -- easier for me to play and I prefer their tone. I have a lot of sunburst guitars. Firefly has enough brand recognition that their guitars have been faster sellers for me. Gotta thin that herd.

My FFLPS HHH would make a high quality, easy & fun to play starter instrument for a beginner guitar student or could be a less costly back up axe for a gigging musician who's into finely honed humbucker tone. Please help me find an appreciative new home for this beautiful LP. She'll make you play happy.
