Vintage 1949–1950 Gretsch New Yorker Archtop Acoustic Guitar – Wartime Era Survivor
This Gretsch New Yorker archtop acoustic guitar is a piece of post-WWII musical history — pulled straight from a basement after decades of rest. Dating to approximately 1949–1950, this guitar features the classic “Gretsch New Yorker” stenciled headstock and bold art deco lines that defined the entry-level archtops of the late '40s and early '50s.
Features:
All-original body with vintage sunburst finish
Faux tortoise pickguard
Arched top with f-holes
Floating wooden bridge
Trapeze-style tailpiece (replaced)
Block inlays on fingerboard
16" lower bout
Condition Notes:
This guitar is sold as-is and shows its age, but has loads of character and potential for restoration or display:
Headstock crack has been partially repaired (stable but visible)
Crack on the left side of the body near the f-hole
Tailpiece and tuning pegs appear to have been replaced
General cosmetic wear throughout, consistent with a guitar of this age
Sound & Playability:
Despite its condition, the guitar holds string tension and can still be played acoustically. It would benefit from setup and further repair if intended for regular use. Perfect for collectors, vintage enthusiasts, or wall art with history.
