Focusrite Red 6 Mic Pre / 4-Band EQ — 1998, Used

For sale is a vintage 1998 Focusrite Red 6 — one of the most underrated pieces of British studio iron ever made, and increasingly hard to find. Unit shows normal cosmetic wear consistent with studio use (light scratches and blemishes on the chassis), but is fully functional. This is the real deal.

About the Unit

The Red 6 combines the same transformer-coupled, fully discrete Class A mic preamp found in the legendary Focusrite Red 1 with the musical 4-band parametric EQ from the Red 2, all in a single 1U rack unit. Think of it as two world-class processors in one box. The EQ and mic pre can be independently switched in and out, making A/B comparisons fast and intuitive.

The Sound

The mic pre is open, airy, and detailed — with a transformer-driven "glow" that flatters everything passing through it without coloring it the way darker-voiced pres do. It sits somewhere between pristine transparency and musical warmth: cleaner than a Neve 1073, smoother than an API 512, and more characterful than a Grace or Millennia. The low end is full-bodied and authoritative; the top end is smooth without being rolled off.

The EQ is where this unit really shines. It's exceptionally musical for low and low-mid sculpting — not a surgical tool, but an expressive one. Pair it with the high/low-pass filters and you have a seriously powerful shaping toolkit.

If you're comparing it to the current market, units in this class (Neve 1073SPX, API 3124+, Avalon 737) sell for two to three times more. The Red 6 is a sleeper.
