Pohaku Tenor Ukulele

I purchased this Pohaku tenor ukulele from a respected ukulele dealer when I was in Tokyo in early 2024, bringing it home with me on the plane.

Other than the fact that I knew that Peter Hurney’s Pohaku ukuleles were superior instruments, I really knew little about this particular one, and since I do not speak Japanese, it was difficult for me to get too much information there.

When I was back home, I wrote to Peter, gave him the serial number of the instrument, and explained the following:

“The luthier told my wife (I don't speak Japanese) that he did a lot of work on it, fixed multiple cracks, fixed warping on the fretboard, and refinished it.”

Peter responded:

“I have in my build notes of old that the instrument was completed July 1996 and the body is curly Koa with a spruce top, a maple fretboard and Mahogany neck. It was built for someone named Fumio??”

The tuners were upgraded by the Japanese luthier to planetary (as you can see in the photos), and the instrument has a lovely, sweet tone. Really a beautiful sound.

That is basically all I know about this particular instrument. I have a Pohaku concert ukulele that I have no intention of selling, but I am not really a tenor player, and since I already have a Martin tenor, I have no need for a second. It makes no sense for this wonderful instrument to sit around unplayed.

Please research Pohaku ukuleles in general and this instrument in particular (if possible) and carefully study the photos before purchasing.
