15" TANNOY SILVER LSU/HF/15L DUAL CONCENTRIC SPEAKER & CROSSOVER

▪️Intro :

This vintage pair of loudspeakers is one of the finest ever that I have a chance to own in my studio engineer and audiophile life.

I have bought them in 2001 from a musician who, at his side, bought them from a London studio arr. 1990.

Since then I used it only in my personal studio for mastering and music audition with Manley Valve AMP.

My studio is non-smoking and air-conditioned.

Maximum power amp used was 30 W for not overcharge the speakers.

▪️About certificate of origin :

1. The speakers are Tannoy originals. 100% original
2. The crossover are Tannoy originals. 100 % original.
3. The enclosures has no exterior attached bedge.  It was removed in the 80s. from the back of the speaker. So it cannot be certified as an original Tannoy.  Given the history of this speaker, I could say that it is an original Tannoy GRF.

▪️The story of this pair of Tannoy GRF speakers:

2001

I bought it in 2001 from Adrian Berinde, a very great folk-rock musician from Romania. 

I cleaned the enclosure on exterior, of the traces of wear and of added black paint.

I cleaned only on the outside of the enclosure.

Only the wheels were replaced with a new functional set.

I left the cloth in front of the speakers untouched.

Inside I left everything as I bought it.

1990

In 1990 Adrian Berinde brought the pair of speakers to Romania and used them in his personal studio. 

’80

He stated that he bought them in London long before 1990, from a very important studio (whose name I can't remember).

When he bought them from that studio, they were already painted black, both the box on the outside and the canvas.

The studio engineer told him that reason they were painted was that they were before a part of the monitoring system of a television studio. They should have been integrated into the black background.

In conclusion:

I believe that given their location (London) and then their use in a television studio and then a music studio, the enclosures should be original Tannoy GRF.

▪️Condition :

100% working at its best.

The Enclosure was cleaned as I specified before.

The interior is absolutely intact. 

The exterior of the speaker has all the original elements. You can see signs of wear due to age.

These signs can be seen in the photos but even better in the video presentation.

I preferred not to make any improvements or cosmetics in order to preserve the original design.

Both the canvas (which I didn’t cleaned at all ) and the wood veneer contain signs of wear in places but they are not very visually disturbing. 

I preferred to keep the original exactly in the condition I bought it.

I am relocating and I intend to bring with me only few units of equipment.

The GRF enclosures provide a compound expanding source, an exclusive feature first introduced in the Tannoy Autograph enclosure. The effect ofthis is that the wave front area varies with frequency, giving an outstanding illusion of realism to both solo and orchestral music. In addition, the system has all of the well known advantages of horn loading (eg: excellentbass radiation and transient response, but none of the spacial distribution efects associated with conventional horns or multispeaker systems.

The Speakers

15" TANNOY SILVER LSU/HF/15L DUAL CONCENTRIC SPEAKER & CROSSOVER

When the 15" Monitor Silver was announced, the crossover network was separated from the chassis to prevent interactions with the ferrous magnet parts. The 15" Monitor Silver was also used in the Corner GRF loudspeaker system launched in 1955. 

The low frequency diaphragm of the 15-inch Dual Concentric Loudspeakeris rear horn loaded down to 30 Hz, while between 350 Hz and 1,000 Hz a new acoustic coupling device gives much improved front radiation. Above thisfrequency the non-directional horn loaded high frequency unit, which formsan integral part of the Dual Concentric Loudspeaker, takes over, servingto preserve the impression of loaction so necessary to ensure realisticreproduction of vocal and solo instrument music. The result of this entirelynew form of horn loading is that, while large orchestral and choral workshave a snese of spacious wave front, both chamber music and solo and vocalmusic possess that intimacy very necessary for full enjoyment.

The GRF enclosure is a fitting compliment to the 15-inch Dual ConcentricLoudspeaker, when the highest standard of performance is required.

Tannoy Loudspeaker Cross-Over Circuits

For maintaince purposes, or for modification (eg: upgrading of components) the following crossover circuits are available. Note that in general the hf driver has an equalisation ciruit associated with it to compensate for its falling efficiency above 3kHz. Also, a nulling circuit is included to reduce a mild response peak near 3kHz.
