16" 5-string Viola
This Five string Caldwell Viola is in great shape. Handmade by Eric Caldwell in 2004. Traditional construction using great Maple back, sides and neck. Excellent Spruce top.
Rosewood pegs with ebony fingerboard, tailpiece and chinrest.
A 5-string Viola naturally differs from a 5-string violin in the size difference. In some occasions, the balance between bass and treble can be hard to attain with the smaller thinner violin body as opposed to the longer and deeper viola body.
This example certainly has great depth and balance.
Eric Caldwell studied violin making with Dr Karl Roy, a director of the Bavarian State School for Violin Making. He spent years building with Peter Zaret & Sons and with Potter Violins.
Mr Caldwel opened his own shop in 2009.
His instruments are well-respected for their refined tone with warmth and richness.
