The Bourgeois 00-Classic Limited Edition #1 is a vintage 28 inspired build with sleek specs. has a voice all its own, warm but with a surprisingly punchy, direct sound. We think of it as the ultimate “couch potato guitar”: Super comfortable to play, it’s the one you’ll keep nearby and gab whenever the urge strikes to croon Beatles tunes, shred blues licks, or write a song. This vintage inspired Bourgeois 00-42 from Dana Bourgeois and company in Lewiston, ME is built with a great set of Hybrid Brazilian Rosewood back and sides with rich color paired with a clean, tight grained Lutz Spruce top, which is a natural occurring hybrid between Sitka and White Spruce with wonderful characteristics of both. The top features cross silking, otherwise known as medullary rays, a sign of a well quartersawn top.
The Brazilian Rosewood has rich contrast of color and nice nort/ south grain with some nice figuring nearer the edges. Bourgeois says, “Sold to us as genuine Brazilian Rosewood, we can attest that this attractive tonewood wood sounds like Brazilian, is of similar weight to Brazilian, and smells like Brazilian. However, due to its striking coloration and atypical grain patterning, we are of the opinion that this is most likely a hybridized version.” So our opinion at Down Home Guitars is that this is a very responsive guitar with warmth and clarity and the glass like tone you would expect. This wood looks exactly like Brazilian and not the wild different color and patterns that they call Hybrid. Honestly the best deal for Brazilian Rosewood out there in a boutique build.
