Here is the story of the 40th LP:

The huge success of the Fender solid body guitars also put Gibson under enormous pressure at the beginning of the 1950s. One of the most legendary rock guitars in history emerged from the collaboration with the then and now immensely popular guitarist Lester Polfus, known as "Les Paul". With its black golden finish, Gibson 'Les Paul' hit like a bomb in 1952.

The anticipation of the 40th anniversary of this new release was probably so great at Gibson that a special edition of the Les Paul was produced in 1991 in a strictly limited edition of 300...

With its gold hardware, ebony fingerboard and cream-coloured binding, this 'Ebony' Les Paul has a decidedly elegant appearance. While the first Les Pauls of the '50s were still equipped with P90 single coils, the "40th Anniversary" with the installed P-100 pickups actually has 'stacked humbuckers' with a comparatively high output, which deliver a warm and rich sound, but visually resemble a P-90 without a 'slim taper'. If you get on well with this, you will find this Anniversary-Les Paul an extremely rare companion for rock or bluesy hours.

The guitar has an impressive sustain unplugged AND plugged.

A very great sounding guitar!  It is bright and clear but never cutting on the bridge pickup. And with a wonderful, deeper bluesy sounding rhythm pickup.
